Why Adults Seek Therapy

We all face moments when life feels heavy or uncertain. Therapy can offer support during times of emotional challenge, loss, or change. Here are some reasons adults go to therapy; you may relate to one or more.

Grief and Loss

Loss comes in many forms — not just through death, but also the ending of relationships, jobs, ways of living, or dreams we held dear. Therapy provides space to honour what’s been lost and begin to process the emotional impact with care and compassion.

Bereavement

When someone we love dies, it can leave us feeling untethered. You may experience sadness, numbness, guilt, anger, or even a sense of unreality. In therapy, you can speak openly and honestly about your grief and what it means to carry that loss.

Chronic Illness

Living with chronic health conditions can be physically and emotionally exhausting. You may be adjusting to new limitations, changes in independence, or shifts in your sense of self. Therapy offers a place to explore these experiences and find resilience within them.

Trauma

Trauma can result from one event or from long-term, repeated experiences. It may affect your relationships, your sense of safety, or how you see yourself. Therapy can gently support your healing in a way that honours your pace, your history, and your needs.

Coping with Life Changes

Life transitions — whether expected or sudden — can stir up feelings of confusion, anxiety, or grief. Retirement, moving home, relationship changes, or becoming a parent (or carer) can challenge our usual ways of coping. Therapy can help you process change and move forward with clarity and support.

Loss of Identity

Sometimes we lose a sense of who we are after a major life event, through illness, parenting, work stress, or long-term caring roles. You may feel disconnected from yourself or unsure of what you need. Therapy provides a space to reconnect with your voice, values, and self-worth.

Other Concerns

You don’t need to fit into a category to seek support. If something doesn’t feel right, or if you simply need a space to talk and explore what’s going on for you, I welcome you to get in touch. Every story matters, and you don’t have to navigate it alone.
